Patterns for knitting beginners

Sometimes it is hard to determine which knitting patterns are good for you especially if you are a beginner to knitting. There are some patterns which are easier than others when you are new to knitting.

The Garter Stitch – the most basic stitch

The garter stitch is the first pattern that you should learn. All you need to know for you to knit this pattern is how to cast on to make the knit stitch and bind off. You will need a pair of knitting needles and balls of yarn which you can buy from a craft store. Despite the fact that this is one of the most basic stitches, there are some things that you can learn such as how to seam, count rows and stitches and how to pick a dropped stitch.

Knitting & Purling

Knitting and purling in the English style is the most common stitching method. For you to purl in this style, you need to work a knit stitch backward. Instead of going into the stitch from front to the back, you will purl by going from the back to the front.

When you are comfortable with working on knits and purls in the same row, you can then move to textured stitches such as the moss stitch. For this stitch, you will require a circular needle even though you will be knitting flat. By stitching moss or seed stitch, you will have the chance to learn how to read your knitting which is a vital skill for later in your knitting venture.

Knitting Colored Stripes

Knitting colored stripes is the fastest and easiest way to get started in color work. With colored stripes, you can use as many colors as you please while working with only one color at a time. While it will be a lot of fun to knit different colored stripes, it is a chance for you to become creative. These are some of the things that you can do. You can use colors at random or even plan for a particular pattern in your color combination. Patterns that have different colors use a standard set of abbreviations such as CC which stands for contrasting color and MC for the main color.

As you will be knitting stripes or even in the circle, you need to count rows you need to keep track of the width of the stripes. When you know that a stripe spans eight rows and counting as you go is easier and very accurate than having to use a tape measure. Odd and even rows are going to affect where the yarn ends up whether it is where you want it to be or at the opposite end of the knitting.

When ready to change colors in a stripe pattern, all you have to do is to join the new color. Unless you are creating random stripes that start and stop anywhere, you are supposed to join colors at the edge. It is therefore essential to know the above easy knitting patterns as you start knitting. Within a short time, you will be a pro.
